Factors to Consider Before Breast Augmentation

For most women, breast augmentation is a positive and life-changing experience. That being said, it is also one that requires careful thought and planning beforehand, to ensure that your personal goals are met and that you are happy with your results. In her latest blog post, Dr. Florence Mussat discusses a few things to consider before having breast augmentation.

Making Sure the Surgery is Right for You

The first factor to consider is whether having breast augmentation is right for you: whether it will help you to achieve the look you’re after and whether you are ready (both physically and emotionally) to have the surgery. For example, do you like the size of your breasts but just wish they were a bit perkier? If so, then a breast lift may better fit your surgery goals. Some other questions to consider: Do you have any serious medical conditions? Are you having the surgery solely to please your significant other? If you answer yes to either of these questions, you may not be considered a good candidate for surgery.

Picking an Implant Size That Fits You and Your Life

Another factor you will need to address pre-surgery is what size breast implants you want. There are many things to keep in mind when choosing an implant size: your body frame (petite, tall, broad-shouldered, etc.), your aesthetic goals (a subtle vs. a more dramatic size increase) and your lifestyle (mostly sedentary vs. mostly active). Considering these factors will help determine what size implants will look best on you, help you to achieve the breasts you’ve always wanted and help you find a size that will work with your day-to-day life.

Preparing Family and Work for Your Recovery

After breast augmentation surgery, you will need at least a week (if not more) to recover. You will need to rest as much as possible during this time, and your mobility will be limited (as you will be restricted from lifting your arms above your head and lifting anything over 10 lbs for the first week. If you have a family, particularly one that includes small children that may need to be lifted, you may wish to ask your husband or another family member or friend to help you around the house so that you can recuperate and heal properly. If you work, you will also need to plan for time off (about one week) for your recovery.
