Breast augmentation is the most popular aesthetic procedure in Chicago. Whether you’re a mother trying to regain your pre-pregnancy form, or you lost considerable weight along with substantial breast volume, breast augmentation may be a viable option.
Have you suffered through a mastectomy due to breast cancer, or were you born with breasts out of balance with your body type? Breast augmentation may be the right solution.
After you’ve decided on breast implants, choosing a breast augmentation surgeon in Chicago is your next most important decision. You want to feel comfortable with your surgeon and feel confident that they understand your concerns and can give you beautiful results. You want to be treated with empathy and compassionate care.
Chicago plastic surgeon Dr. Florence Mussat understands that for many women, their breasts are a sign of femininity and beauty. She is also sensitive to the sentiment which many women with petite breasts share: frustration with their small bust line. That is why Dr. Mussat is happy to offer Chicago breast augmentation as an effective means of enhancing breasts.
Chicago Breast Augmentation Candidates
Women in Chicago who are appropriate candidates for breast augmentation surgery include those who:
- Desire more voluminous breasts and more dramatic cleavage
- May require a subtle lift throughout mildly sagging or flat-looking breasts
- Are in good health
- Have decided to pursue surgical breast enhancement on their own
- Recognize both the rewards and potential drawbacks to the procedure (such as the likelihood of having to replace breast implants within 10-15 years and the possible surgical risks), but feel that the benefits surpass the risks
Types of Breast Implants
There are three main types of breast implants available for our Chicago patients:
- Saline Breast Implants
- Traditional silicone gel breast implants
- Form-stable silicone gel breast implants
Each type of breast implant has their own advantages and disadvantages.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants have a silicone outer shell and a saline (sterile saltwater solution) filling. One benefit of these types of breast implants is that the body can safely absorb the saline solution in case of a breast implant leak or rupture. Also, it is easier to detect a problem with saline breast implants because the solution drains out of the implant shell, causing the affected breast to look deflated. Another benefit is that the Chicago Plastic Surgeon Dr. Mussat can use a smaller incision when placing saline breast implants because she can fill them after the breast implants are inserted. Saline breast implants are also often the most economical option.
One of the main potential drawbacks of saline breast implants is that they are more prone to visible rippling or wrinkling underneath the surface of the skin. For this reason, they are usually not an appropriate treatment option for women with thin skin or limited breast tissue—since it’s important to cover and support the breast implants properly.
For some women, saline breast implants feel too hard and do not resemble natural breast tissue as closely as traditional silicone breast implants can.
Traditional Silicone Gel Breast Implants
The most significant advantage of traditional silicone gel breast implants is that they more closely resemble the look and feel of natural breast tissue. They are also less likely to wrinkle or fold within the breast implant pocket or cause visible rippling beneath the skin’s surface. Silicone breast implants are slightly more expensive than their saline counterparts, but many patients believe the benefits outweigh the cost.
One potential disadvantage of silicone implants is that the body cannot absorb the filling material, which can leak into the implant pocket. This does make it more difficult to detect a problem with these breast implants.
Form-Stable Silicone Breast Implants (Gummy Bear)
The newest generation of silicone breast implants is more cohesive than traditional silicone breast implants. Thanks to their form-stable consistency, they are not likely to fold or move around within the breast implant pocket even while the patient is reclining. They are named after the gummy bear candy because these breast implants will retain their shape even if cut in half.
They come in a variety of shapes and different degrees of projection, often making them a good treatment option for women undergoing breast reconstruction surgery following mastectomy or lumpectomy for the treatment of breast cancer.
“Dr. Mussat was the only doctor I could find confident enough to reconstruct my breasts with implants after having a child and capsular contracture from another doctor’s surgery. Almost nine years later they still look and feel natural! I would do it all over again if I had too!” ~ Breast Revision, Chicago
Incision Patterns for Breast Augmentation in Chicago
Depending on the patient’s aesthetic concerns and anatomical needs, Dr. Mussat will recommend one of the following incision patterns for breast augmentation surgery.
The Periareolar Incision
With this incision pattern, Dr. Mussat makes an incision around the outer perimeter of the areola, the darker pigmented skin surrounding the nipple. This breast augmentation incision conceals the resulting scar within the darker areola skin. However, this incision option may not be appropriate for women who are concerned with a temporary or permanent loss of nipple sensation and difficulty breastfeeding.
The Inframammary Incision
Dr. Mussat places this horizontal incision underneath the natural breast crease. This breast augmentation incision pattern offers little to no risk of affecting nipple sensation, but may be visible when the patient lifts up her arms without sufficient coverage of the breast (i.e., when wearing a bikini top or similar clothing). Nonetheless, with proper care, the scar should fade until it closely resembles the color of the surrounding skin, so it is nearly imperceptible.
The Transaxillary Incision
This breast augmentation incision pattern is placed in the underarm area, in the armpit fold, making it almost invisible. It is best suited for the insertion of saline breast implants before Dr. Mussat fills them.
Breast Augmentation Placement Options
Dr. Mussat places breast implants either under the chest muscle (subpectoral placement) or over the chest muscle but under the breast glandular tissue (sub glandular placement). As with the other treatment options, there are advantages and disadvantages of each placement technique.
Submuscular placement is appropriate for women with little body fat and thin skin, as it provides a greater degree of breast implant support and coverage. Nevertheless, this breast implant placement technique is more invasive than sub glandular placement and may require a few more days of recovery time.
This breast augmentation placement option is less invasive than submuscular placement and requires a less intense, or shorter, recovery period. However, it does not provide an ample amount of implant coverage and support. For women with thin skin and little body fat who undergo sub-glandular implant placement, the breast implants may be visible underneath the skin’s surface, making this a poor treatment option for them.
During your Chicago breast augmentation consultation, Dr. Mussat will evaluate your unique body type and frame, listen to your aesthetic concerns and suggest an appropriate treatment option, including the type of breast implants, incision pattern, and placement option which she believes will achieve your surgical goals.
What Happens During Breast Augmentation in Chicago?
Breast Augmentation is an outpatient procedure performed under a general anesthetic at award-winning and nationally ranked St. Joseph Hospital of Chicago. There may be flexibility in anesthesia depending on what you prefer.
After the incision, Dr. Mussat will create a pocket within the breast tissue, and place the breast implant under or over the pectoral muscle. When using a saline implant, Dr. Mussat will insert the shell first, and fill the breast implant with a saline solution. After proper placement, Dr. Mussat will close the incision with dissolvable sutures.
After an appropriate period of recovery, we will release you to the care of friend or family member. You cannot drive for 24 hours due to the effects of anesthesia.
Recovery from Breast Augmentation in Chicago
We will send you home with instructions on how to care for yourself after your breast augmentation. These instructions will support the verbal directions given during your previous visits. Dr. Mussat will evaluate you the day after your surgery and will monitor your progress during recovery. We ask you to contact us if you have any questions.
Expect some bruising, swelling, and discomfort after surgery, but these effects should be minimal. Swelling is often the last side effect to subside. The incision scar will fade over time, and we will give you instructions to speed its healing.
You will be prescribed medication to relieve your pain and help keep you comfortable. If you experience pain, you can take over-the-counter or the prescribed medications. Over-the-counter pain medication like Tylenol is often sufficient, but you will have something stronger if needed.
We will fit you with a soft sports bra or camisole top to wear until Dr. Mussat recommends changing to more traditional undergarments. You should sleep on your back for about four weeks and avoid heavy lifting and any strenuous activities for at least two weeks.
Most women in Chicago return to office work within a week after breast augmentation, but Dr. Mussat will discuss your return based on your recovery. We will provide you with an after surgery strategy to help you return to your normal lifestyle as soon as possible.
