Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Florence Mussat recognizes that gynecomastia, or enlarged male breast tissue, can be a highly embarrassing problem for many men. Often, men with gynecomastia feel so self-conscious about their condition that they avoid intimacy or social situations that require them to take their shirts off, such as swimming or enjoying a summer day at the lake. Pseudo-Gynecomastia vs. Clinical Gynecomastia

Sometimes, men suffer from excess fat throughout the chest area, which contributes to the look of enlarged male breasts. This is referred to as pseudo-gynecomastia. Pseudo-gynecomastia may be caused by major weight fluctuations, age, or hereditary traits. To improve the look of excess fat throughout the chest area, Dr. Mussat might recommend liposuction of the chest, for a more sculpted look throughout the treatment area.

Other men suffer from enlarged glandular breast tissue; this is true clinical gynecomastia. Clinical gynecomastia often occurs during adolescence but may resolve itself as the male grows older. The condition also often affects older men, between the ages of 50 and 80. In addition, hormone imbalances caused by chronic use of some medications and drugs, such as anti-androgens, androgens, anabolic steroids, marijuana, and alcohol (among several others), can lead to gynecomastia. There are also several health conditions that can cause gynecomastia, including hypogonadism, hyperthyroidism, kidney failure, liver failure, cirrhosis, and some types of tumors.

What to Expect During Gynecomastia Surgery

To treat pseudo-gynecomastia, cosmetic surgeon Dr. Mussat may, again, perform liposuction of the chest. This is an outpatient plastic surgery procedure that can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia and intravenous (IV) sedation. To start the liposuction procedure, she makes an extremely small incision in the treatment area, through which she inserts a cannula (a thin, hollow tube). She uses the cannula to suction out the unwanted fat. Once Dr. Mussat is finished, she dresses the treatment area with soft bandages and an overlying compression garment to provide added support to the tissues while they heal and to minimize swelling.

To treat clinical gynecomastia, Dr. Mussat performs male breast reduction surgery and may include liposuction of the chest for optimal results. If she performs liposuction, she does this first. The Chicago gynecomastia surgeon then makes an incision around the outer edge of the areola, or the darker-pigmented skin encircling the nipple. Dr. Mussat removes excess skin, as needed, before removing excess breast glandular tissue. She closes the incision with sutures and dresses the treatment area with bandages and possibly an overlying compression garment.

After surgery, patients can expect to take about three to five days off from work or their usual routine. Many of the aesthetic benefits of gynecomastia treatment are visible right after surgery, but the final outcome of the procedure takes a few months to become fully apparent; this is how long it takes for the body to heal entirely and for any residual swelling to dissipate.

Gynecomastia Surgery FAQs

Is gynecomastia surgery safe?

Yes. Treating gynecomastia is a safe procedure for men looking to eliminate excess breast tissue. In most cases, men recover without complications and resume their daily activities within three days. Although risks are minimal, there are post-surgery side-effects, including swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort. Fortunately, these can be managed with medications and after-care.

Does gynecomastia surgery hurt?

No. Dr. Mussat’s gynecomastia treatment is male breast surgery under general anesthetic to ensure no discomfort during the operation. Once the surgery is completed, you can see visible results. Gynecomastia surgery recovery is highly tolerable, with mild pain managed by medication.

How long does glandular gynecomastia surgery take?

Male breast reduction is performed as an outpatient operation, meaning you go home the same day. The surgery takes about an hour or two to complete.

Can gynecomastia come back after male breast reduction surgery?

No. Once the gland tissue is removed, it is gone for good. Even if you gain weight after surgery, the fat distribution is uniform and will not concentrate in your chest area.

Can gynecomastia be treated without surgery?

No. The only resolution for excess male breast tissue is male breast reduction surgery. The gynecomastia condition results from a hormonal imbalance leading to fat accumulations and enlarged breast glands.
