Lopsided breasts are common. You may be surprised to learn that as many as 88% of women report some degree of breast asymmetry. However, when breasts differ by one or more cup sizes, this common problem can have an extraordinary impact on your psychological well being. If you suffer from a noticeably lopsided bosom, you may feel self-conscious. You might avoid swimsuits, tight-fitting shirts, and revealing dresses out of fear that others will notice your uneven chest.
Improving uneven breasts is possible. You don’t have to cover a lopsided chest with padding or oversized sweaters anymore. Surgeries like breast augmentation or breast reduction can correct an irregular bust and give you the even, well-formed bust of your dreams. Doctor Florence Mussat in Chicago, Illinois, has years of experience performing breast surgeries on patients from all walks of life.
Choosing the right surgery for you
The surgery you undergo to correct your lopsidedness will depend on your breasts and your aesthetic goals. If you wish to make your smaller breast larger or increase the size of both breasts, you should opt for a breast augmentation. In breast augmentation, Doctor Florence Mussat places an implant in one or both breasts to boost their size. If you believe that the larger breast or both of your breasts are too big, you can undergo a breast reduction.
Correcting Asymmetry by Increasing your Breast Size
A popular way to create an even, symmetrical chest is by increasing the size of one or more breasts through breast augmentation. Before the operation, Doctor Florence Mussat will work with you to select the right implant size for your body shape. Though you do not need to put implants in both breasts, it is recommended that you do so to ensure a uniform appearance.
Doctor Florence Mussat has experience working with Saline, Silicone, and Form-Stable Silicone (gummy bear) breast implants. When you meet for your consultation, you and your doctor will decide which implant type is right for you. If you opt to implant only one breast, you might choose an implant that matches the feel of your larger breast. Implant incisions are discreet. You can discuss with Dr. Mussat whether you want the incision under your breast, around your nipple, or hidden inside your armpit.
You can also increase the size of one or more breasts with an autologous fat transfer. In this procedure, fat is taken from an area of your body like thighs, butt, or hip and grafted to your breast. This treatment is advised for those with a smaller degree of asymmetry.
Following your procedure, you are advised not to drive for 24 hours. You are encouraged to arrange for a friend or family member to pick you up. Bruising, swelling, and discomfort are common side effects, but should subside within a few weeks to a month. Most patients are able to manage any pain they experience with Tylenol.
Correcting Asymmetry by Reducing your Breast Size
Many people long for bigger breasts, but others know the toll that having a larger bust can take. Back problems, downward-pointing nipples, and difficulty exercising are just a few of the reasons you might want a breast reduction. If you are satisfied with the size of your smaller breast, or wish to reduce the size of both breasts, then a breast reduction is right for you. Depending on the extent of your lopsidedness, Doctor Florence Mussat will make one of three incisions: Lollipop, Periareolar, or Anchor.
If you want to create a perkier, more youthful appearance while reducing your chest size, a Lollipop incision is right for you. If you are making a significant change in the size of one or more breasts, then the Anchor incision is ideal. In addition to a breast reduction surgery, you might also consider a breast lift. This procedure helps ensure uniformity in both the size, and the position of both breasts by removing excess skin and creating a higher nipple placement.
Asymmetry caused by a breast implant is best treated with breast revision surgery or a breast implant removal with a breast lift.

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the world! While many women are opting for breast augmentation, not everyone is an ideal candidate for the procedure. The ideal candidate for breast augmentation is:
- A non-smoker in good health.
- Desires larger breasts and more cleavage.
- Made the decision to undergo cosmetic surgery on their own.
- Is aware of potential risks and complications.
- Believes that the benefits outweigh the risks.
- Understand that replacement surgery may be necessary in 10 to 15 years.

For many women, having breast augmentation surgery is a dream come true. Whether you’re seeking to have irregularities in your breast shape corrected, want to restore lost breast volume, or you’re simply tired of feeling self-conscious about having small breasts, this procedure can be life-changing. Alas, breast augmentation also carries some negative connotations, largely left over from years past when celebrities getting over-sized implants was common. Naturally, then, not every woman wants to share the fact that she’s had breast implants with the world.
If you can relate to this desire for privacy, or you’re simply curious about when the best time to recover from plastic surgery is, then you’ll be interested to know that wintertime offers some unique recovery advantages.
4 Reasons to Schedule Breast Augmentation During the Winter
-
Free time is plentiful for most of us.
After the rush of the holiday season ends, most people just want to rest and relax. As such, you’ll probably find that you have fewer work commitments and social obligations in January and February. Business slows down, and if you live in a cold climate, chances are good that most of your friends and relatives simply want to stay inside until spring. It’s also common for people to take some vacation time right after the holidays, so no one will wonder why you suddenly need to book two weeks off of work. All of these factors set up the ideal conditions for plastic surgery recovery.
-
You can get away with wearing additional layers.
You’ll want to “cover up” after having breast augmentation surgery, for a few reasons. One, most women want to hide their surgical incisions while they’re still healing. (These scars will take a few months to completely fade, too, so midwinter is a great time to book breast augmentation. By the time it’s warm enough to even think about wearing a bikini, your scars will barely be noticeable.) Two, you’ll probably experience some swelling for a few weeks after breast surgery—and this can have the effect of making one’s breasts look too large. Thick sweaters are a great way to mask this swelling. Three, many breast augmentation patients find that their implants look much more “natural” once they have had a few months to settle. This is because gravity will pull the implant down slightly while your natural breast tissue heals, mitigating the overt roundness and highness of freshly-placed implants.
Finally, keeping incisions covered while they are healing is an essential step toward minimizing scarring. If incisions are exposed to sunlight while they are still pink, they can become damaged by the sun. This sometimes causes the development of dark scar tissue that does not fully fade away. By having breast augmentation surgery in the winter, you virtually guarantee that your incisions will stay protected by sweaters and jackets. Just remember to avoid the tanning bed, too; any form of ultra violet radiation has the potential to darken scar tissue.
-
You can use the holidays to help you finance your surgery.
If you feel comfortable talking about your wish to have breast augmentation surgery with your friends and family members, then you may be able to enlist their aid in financing your surgery. You can ask people to contribute money to help cover your surgical costs in place of purchasing you Christmas gifts, for example. You can also ask for plastic surgery gift cards if you’re lucky enough to have very generous friends or family members.
-
Your recovery will be more comfortable.
While most women don’t experience a great deal of pain after having breast implants inserted, even a little bit of pain can become very irritating if you’re physically uncomfortable. Many women have reported that the heat bothers them more while they’re healing from plastic surgery. Sweat, too, can cause healing incisions to itch more severely. Likewise, the additional layers of clothing needed to protect still-healing incisions can become suffocatingly hot in the summer. You’ll therefore probably find that your recovery is more comfortable during the cooler months.
Not everyone makes an ideal winter plastic surgery candidate. If you enjoy winter sports or prefer to travel to a warmer climate every year, then you may find scheduling breast augmentation during the winter months is inconvenient. If, on the other hand, your favorite thing to do is “hibernate” until March, you might as well spend all of that downtime working on your physique. Having a shapelier body to look forward to will be just another reason to eagerly anticipate the arrival of spring.
Your 20s are a great time for a breast augmentation procedure. This procedure will place implants into your breast for enhancement and firmness. It is the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in Chicago and the entire country. I wrote this post to share with young ladies in their 20s what they need to know when considering this surgical procedure.
Breast Implant Replacement in the Future
Saline and silicone breast implants can last several years, but they will likely need replacing at least once in your lifetime. In the past, plastic surgeons recommended replacing implants every ten years, but implants have come a long way. Now it is recommended to replace implants only as needed. Replacement can be for leakage due to rupture, upgrade to a more advanced model, or adjust the size or shape.
Choices for Breast Implants
If you are under 22, silicone implants are not available for you. That is not to say you cannot achieve optimal results. Both saline and silicone implants are beneficial and can successfully transform your breasts to your desired outcome.
The FDA has approved saline filled breast implants for women over the age of 18 while approving silicone filled implants for women over the age of 22. Consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon will help you to determine which type is best suited for you and if waiting for silicone might be the best option.
You Can Probably Still Breastfeed
Is breastfeeding still possible with breast implants? The answer is yes in many cases. During the consultation, let us know if this is a priority to determine the best incision to ensure success.
Pregnancy Can Cause Breast Changes
Getting pregnant after breast augmentation can cause changes to your breasts. These changes are common and may have occurred regardless of having the procedure or not. Many times a breast lift can restore any negative effects from childbearing.
Medical History a Factor
If you are a smoker, it is always in your best interest to quit, but more so if you are contemplating surgery. If you smoke, that can cause undue complications during and after surgery. I recommend you quit before considering any surgery, including breast augmentation.
We will discuss medical history during your consultation including any medications and supplements you may be taking. A big advantage to having the procedure in your 20s is the likelihood of being in good physical condition.
Importance of Realistic Expectations
An important factor in preparing for breast augmentation surgery is to set realistic goals. Factors including body type and anatomical limitations will determine what we can and cannot achieve with your procedure. Many young ladies incorrectly assume they can have the breasts of a celebrity or someone they know.
It is critical to set realistic expectations for your procedure. As a surgeon, I want my patients to be 100% satisfied with every procedure I perform. During the consultation, I explain every aspect of the surgery and how to realize optimal results. We take the time to size your breasts and allow you to visualize what would be the best implant for your anatomy. This information will set the stage for a successful procedure.

If you’re thinking about breast augmentation, here are five things you need to know before surgery.
Saline and Silicone Implants Are Both Good Choices
Saline or silicone? The good news is, both implant types can yield stunning results. Saline implants can be used on younger patients (18+), tend to be more affordable, can be placed through a smaller incision, and allow for easy leak detection. Silicone implants can be used on patients aged 22+. They feel more natural, even outside of the breast, and are less likely to wrinkle or ripple in the breast. Cohesive silicone gel implants, also called gummy bear implants, retain their shape very well and are available in many shapes and projections making them ideal for breast reconstruction. Each of these implant choices has its advantages and Dr. Mussat will help you choose the best implant type for your goals.
You’ll Probably Need to Replace Your Implants at Least Once
Breast surgery provides long lasting results, but you need to realize that your breast augmentation is unlikely to be your last breast surgery. Most women will need to replace or remove their implants at some point, hopefully many years in the future.
Breast Augmentation Isn’t Right for Everyone
Breast augmentation is an excellent option for many women, but it isn’t right for everyone. You may be a good candidate if:
• You want bigger breasts and more cleavage.
• You want to provide subtle lift to aging or flattened breasts.
• You want to change and improve your breasts, not achieve perfection.
• You have good physical and mental health.
• You are choosing breast surgery for you, not someone else.
• You understand that breast surgery has risks, but feel that the benefits outweigh them.
If you think you’re a good candidate for surgery, come meet with Dr. Mussat. We can help you determine if you’re ready for breast augmentation.
We’ll Work with You to Design Your New Breasts
Breast augmentation is highly customizable. We’ll work with you to choose implant size and type, incision locations, and implant placement. You Will Need Time Off from Work
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure and will require some downtime for recovery. Plan on taking about a week off from work. You’ll need to avoid strenuous activities, including exercise, for about six weeks after surgery.
