How You Can Slim Down This Summer with Liposuction

Reinvent your shape with Dr. Florence Mussat‘s liposuction services. Perhaps you’re sticking to a healthy lifestyle routine but aren’t seeing improvements. You’d like to part ways with unwanted body fat, but you’re not sure what to do. Thankfully, liposuction can help you feel better about your appearance.

Here’s how!

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction treats trapped, stubborn fat by using techniques that remove fat for body contouring and improved health. Common locations for fat removal include the thighs, arms, neck, hips, abdomen, and buttocks.

Liposuction’s Proven Benefits

Many studies suggest that the surgery may reduce the total number of inflammatory cells by 11%—the greater the inflammatory cells, the greater one’s risk for cardiovascular disease. The reduction of inflammatory cells also improves cholesterol. Reducing blood fat levels decreases total triglycerides. Some research suggests that triglycerides are reduced more significantly through liposuction than through medication. In a 2011 study, persons with high blood fat levels had a 43% decrease in triglycerides than those on medication with a 20% reduction.

How Does Liposuction in Chicago with Dr. Musset Work?

The patient is sedated using general or local anesthesia and IV sedation. Traditional liposuction begins with a small incision at the target area. Next, a saline solution and an anesthetic are injected to remove more fat and reduce bleeding. Then, a cannula is inserted and moved through the incision area, and fat cells are suctioned out. Once removed, the area is dressed in soft bandages and overlying compression materials to reduce swelling.

Good Candidates for Liposuction

Those with hormonal imbalances, autoimmune disorders, and susceptibility to weight fluctuations are good candidates. Ideal candidates have highly elastic skin, as this is required to shape the musculature after fat removal. If the skin is not flexible, it will be difficult for the skin to reshape itself. Candidates must not be pregnant, breastfeeding, or be below a healthy body weight to partake in liposuction.

What Happens During a Liposuction Treatment?

The surgeon will inject a solution that helps in fat removal and an anesthetic to relieve tension and pain experienced during standard procedures. Epinephrine is also injected to assist with the constriction of blood vessels. This constriction aids in fat removal. You will be under anesthesia and will not feel any pain during the procedure.

Liposuction Recovery

Full recovery can take anywhere between two and three months. You may return to work after one week and start exercising after four weeks. The more time you give your body to rest, the faster it will heal. Be prepared for swelling, bruising, and soreness, and continue wearing compression bandages as you heal.

What Causes Stubborn Fat and What Can You Do About It?

It seems like no matter what diet you’re on or how much you exercise, that stubborn fat on your thighs, belly, and buttocks just won’t go away. Everything from our genetics to our age most likely dictates where most of our fat is going to accumulate. And if you’re a woman, it won’t make you feel any better being told that women tend to store fat on the belly and buttocks in addition to the hips and thighs.

Dr. Florence Mussat offers different options for medically-supervised weight loss, and she will help you choose from a number of diets, as well as weight loss prescription medicine.

A Board-Certified Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Florence Mussat has the skills, training, and experience to work with you in understanding the underlying causes behind your stubborn body fat. Taking a Closer Look at the Causes of Stubborn Fat

Here are just a few of the causes of stubborn fat and what you can do about them.

Unhealthy Diet

Having an irregular diet plan made up of large meals, processed takeout foods, refined carbohydrates, and sugary drinks could well result in the accumulation of stubborn fat on your abdomen, buttocks, and hips. Apart from leading to an increase in fat, with this type of diet, there is an increase in insulin resistance leading to the storage of undesirable hard-to-lose fat.

Menopause and Estrogen Imbalance

For a woman, the stubborn fat found on your abdomen, hips, and buttocks can be caused by the drop in estrogen that usually occurs during perimenopause and menopause. As your body winds down after its child-bearing years, fat is redistributed to your midsection, creating what is sometimes referred to as a “muffin top.”

Yo-Yo Dieting

Yo-yo dieting refers to the repetitive process of losing weight through dieting and then gaining it back again. This dieting pattern results in the loss of muscle tissue along with the fat, especially if you’re not consuming enough protein. When you start to regain weight, unless you’re doing strength training, the weight you put on will mostly be fat. As a result, you’ll end up with a higher body fat percentage.

Sedentary Lifestyle

You’re probably not locked into a completely sedentary lifestyle but instead juggle several responsibilities, many of them all at the same time. However, large parts of your day may require you to sit stationary in the same place for hours on end, making it more challenging to be more active and burning excess fat.

Consider setting a reminder on your phone or activity tracker and getting up to take a short walk every hour. All these steps will count towards your step goal for the day!

Body Contouring After Extreme Weight Loss

Body Contouring After Extreme Weight Loss

Achieving massive weight loss is physically and emotionally freeing, but it also presents new challenges for patients. Foremost among these is loose, hanging skin: Most people who have lost more than 50 pounds notice folds of excess skin around their abdomen, thighs, and arms. Women also typically experience a reduction in breast volume, which can make the breasts look droopy or flat.

Unfortunately, loose skin doesn’t usually firm up on its own over time, even if the patient is young. Most massive weight loss patients require one or more body contouring procedures to achieve full comfort and confidence.

What are the Benefits of Body Contouring after Massive Weight Loss?

Body contouring after extreme weight loss is usually recommended for medical reasons. Left untreated, folds of loose skin tend to cause chafing and irritation, and they frequently limit a person’s ability to exercise. Over time, they may even become infected. By removing excess skin, body contouring procedures eliminate these risks.

Research has also shown that having body contouring is an important part of long-term weight maintenance. Patients who have one or more cosmetic procedures after massive weight less are less likely to regain weight than patients who have no cosmetic surgery. Not only does body contouring make it easier for patients to stay active, it confers important emotional benefits. When weight loss patients achieve a physique that they’re truly proud of, they become much more motivated to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Which Procedures Should You Consider?

Some people who have lost a significant amount of weight only require tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery. This is more likely to be the case if you’ve lost less than 100 pounds or most of your excess weight was centralized around your abdomen. Usually, however, massive weight loss patients need to have what is known as a “body lift.” A body lift is a specialized series of operations designed to address skin laxity and remaining unwanted fat in multiple locations. It may include arm lift, thigh lift, buttock lift, tummy tuck, and breast lift surgery (for female patients).

These operations won’t be performed all at once. Instead, a body lift is performed in several stages, starting with the lower body and working upwards. Because body lift surgery is so comprehensive and complex, few plastic surgeons offer it. Dr. Florence Mussat is one of only a few plastic surgeons in Chicago who specialize in this procedure.

When to have Body Contouring after Weight Loss

Before you can have a body lift, you’ll need to show that you can maintain a healthy weight. Patients who are still overweight have a greater risk of experiencing complications during and after surgery, so it’s essential to reach a normal BMI before you proceed with treatment. You’ll also need to be in good overall health: If you experienced diabetes or cardiovascular disease due to your weight, you’ll need to have those conditions treated successfully before you tackle the challenges of surgery.

Forming realistic expectations is another important aspect of preparing for a body lift: Patients must understand that some scarring is to be expected after this type of procedure. Most people must also work hard during recovery to achieve and maintain the shape they want. Having cosmetic surgery is the first step, but you’ll also need to work out and take excellent care of your skin if you want truly stunning results.

Dr. Florence Mussat provides thorough, compassionate care to all of her post-bariatric and medical weight loss patients. It’s her goal to help patients stay safe, healthy, and motivated as they commit to leaving obesity in the past. Reach Your 2019 Goals with these Body Contouring Procedures

Do your body goals seem to get a bit more elusive every year? If you’re already exercising and following a healthy, nutritious eating plan, the problem probably isn’t your lifestyle. Biological factors, like genetic fat distribution patterns or age-related fat centralization, may be working against you.

Though diet and exercise are both important for overall health, their ability to reshape the body is more limited than many people realize. Diet and exercise can’t “spot reduce” deposits of stubborn fat, nor can they permanently destroy fat cells (weight loss just causes existing fat cells to shrink). As we lose weight, our bodies become smaller in size, but their basic proportions remain the same. This can make it extremely difficult (if not impossible) to get rid of an inherited double chin or love handles without losing a dangerous amount of weight.

Body contouring procedures, by contrast, have the power to permanently destroy fat cells. When a body contouring procedure is applied to a specific problem area, it actually reduces the density of the fat cells in that region, making it visibly slimmer. Body contouring procedures aren’t intended to replace weight loss—most only remove between three to eight pounds of fat—but they’re ideal for sculpting away fat that won’t respond to diet or exercise. Body contouring procedures are also the only way to get rid of loose skin that’s been created by weight loss, pregnancy, or normal aging. Some of our most popular body contouring procedures are outlined below:

Liposuction is the “gold standard” in fat removal. This procedure can remove up to ten pounds of unwanted fat, quickly and without creating noticeable scars. Liposuction also has the distinct advantage of being versatile: It’s the only fat removal procedure that can be used virtually anywhere on the body. Liposuction can treat both large areas, like the belly and back, and very small areas, like the fingers and the space under the chin.

During liposuction, Dr. Mussat uses a very thin tube called a cannula to remove fat cells. The cannula is inserted directly into the patient’s subcutaneous fat through a small “keyhole” incision. Dr. Mussat then irrigates the treatment area with a tumescent solution that’s designed to liquefy fat cells while controlling pain, bleeding, and swelling. The patient’s unwanted fat is then removed via suction.

Tummy Tuck Surgery

Tummy tuck surgery, medically known as abdominoplasty, combines liposuction with skin resection and muscle repair to create a lean, flat stomach. Tummy tuck surgery is used to heal damage that’s been done to the abdomen by pregnancy or substantial weight gain, making it a core part of most mommy makeovers.

Arm Lift Surgery

Many people—especially women—notice that as they get older, their upper arms start to look flabby. In women, hormonal changes cause fat cells to move away from the legs and hips and migrate to the belly, bust, and arms. In both sexes, declining muscle mass creates pockets of loose skin on the arms.

Arm lift surgery can reshape the arms, making them look slim and toned again. During this procedure, liposuction is used to remove excess fat from the arms, then Dr. Mussat carefully trims away any loose skin that’s left over.
