Your Labiaplasty Questions Answered

Labiaplasty is a procedure for altering the inner or outer labia. Labiaplasty can alter the appearance of the labia for women that experience physical discomfort or do not like how the size or shape of their labia looks. Dr. Florence Mussat is a Chicago plastic surgeon with over 15 years of experience in private practice. In this post, she shares valuable information for women that want to know more about labiaplasty.

What Labiaplasty Can Do

Labiaplasty can reduce the size of labial tissue or provide a sense of symmetry to unusually shaped labia. There are two main techniques used to accomplish this: the trim and the wedge methods. The trim method removes excess labial skin from the outer edge of the labia, while the wedge method removes a v-shaped wedge from the labia, but leaves the outer edge intact. Your plastic surgeon can discuss which method is more appropriate for your needs during your consultation.

The Labiaplasty Procedure

Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure that usually takes about an hour to perform. General anesthesia is used, so the patient will not experience any pain during the procedure, and should only experience minor discomfort during the recovery period. Some results will be visible in as little as a week, but full results won’t be seen until about six weeks after the procedure when the tissues are fully healed and all swelling has subsided.

How to Recover from Labiaplasty

The patient will need to use a feminine pad for the first four or five days after the procedure, and should wear loose-fitting clothing to protect the treatment area. There may be some minor discomfort, which can usually be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medications. Exercise and vigorous activity should be avoided for about four weeks, and patients should wait four to six weeks before engaging in sexual activity or using tampons. Your doctor will inform you when it is safe to resume these activities.
