Over time, some women decide that they no longer like the way their breast implants look, and they prefer to have them removed. There is the concern about the appearance of the natural breasts, especially if the implants are particularly big or the skin has lost its natural elasticity. To achieve beautiful looking results with implant removal, Dr. Florence Mussat often combines breast lift techniques into the operation. If you are interested in having your implants removed and enjoying a beautiful natural breast appearance, please contact Dr. Mussat at her plastic surgery practice today.
Reasons to Consider Breast Implant Removal
Women have different reasons for removing their implants. Some women simply do not like the look or feel of their oversized breasts any longer; perhaps their aesthetic ideal has shifted and they prefer a smaller breast size. Other women may feel their implants no longer suit their lifestyle or activity level. A small group of women experience rare breast implant complications, such as capsular contracture or implant rupture, and need the implants removed immediately.
Is Breast Lift Needed?
In some cases, breast lift is needed at the time of the implant removal to achieve lighter and perkier looking breasts. Whether breast lift techniques are necessary depends on factors such as:
- The size of the implants
- How long the implants have been in place
- The elasticity of the breast skin
- Any weight fluctuation since the placement of the implants
- The location of the nipple-areolar complex
- Whether the augmented breasts are already sagging or sitting low on the chest
Dr. Mussat will work with you to assess your personal needs and to determine the most appropriate course of treatment.
Dr. Mussat performs breast implant removal with breast lift on an outpatient basis. Anesthesia is used.
The incision pattern depends on the amount of excess skin and degree of correction needed. Dr. Mussat keeps the incisions as small as possible for little to no post-operative scarring. She may make the incision around the lower edge of the areola, around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease, or around the areola, down to the breast crease and horizontally along the breast crease.
Through the incision, Dr. Mussat carefully removes the implants. In cases of implant rupture or capsular contracture, she removes the “capsules” that hold the implants, too. After removing the implants, she trims excess breast skin and reshapes the existing natural breast tissue into a mound higher on the chest wall. Dr. Mussat relocates the nipple-areolar complex higher on the breast. When she is finished making the surgical modifications, she closes the incisions with sutures and bandages the breasts.
Recovering from Surgery
Patients should plan to take one to two weeks off from work to recover from surgery. Strenuous activities, bending and lifting should be avoided during this time.
The breasts may be sore, swollen, bruised, numb or tender during the initial recovery. Any pain or discomfort can be treated with medication prescribed by Dr. Mussat. Wearing a compression garment helps to support the breasts as they heal and reduce some of the swelling.
Scarring fades significantly over time. Most women are happy to trade minor scarring for a more beautiful breast shape and position.
